Can You Talk with Conviction When You Don't Know the Answer?

Can You Talk with Conviction When You Don't Know the Answer?

What Is Conviction in the Context of Your Career?

To me, in the world of entrepreneurship and career, to talk with conviction means, in its simplest terms: sounding like you know what you're talking about.

Of course, there are nuances to this. Others might rightfully say conviction encompasses confidence, clarity, and a deep self-belief that you are genuinely invested in what you are saying. But I think you can speak with conviction without some of those orbiting factors. In fact, in the real world, I don't think you need all of them to operate effectively - as long as you sound like you know what you are talking about.

Why Should Entrepreneurs Talk with Conviction?

There are plenty of reasons why conviction is a critical tool to keep in your toolbox, many of which I will explore in future writing. But for now, I want to focus on the biggest driver: most people don't actually know what they are doing, so they naturally listen to the person who sounds like they do.

Whether you're dealing with clients, senior leaders, or peers, it is a simple reality of life that most people are figuring things out as they go. We may know the desired destination, the outcome, or the final target - but no one can predict every single problem or barrier along the way. You cannot possibly always know what you are doing.

In my experience, eight times out of ten, people will give you devoted ears simply on the basis that you appear to be the person in the room who knows what's going on. Now i'm no cognitive psychologists, but as history shows across centuries of evolution - from tribe leaders to ship captains - I believe humans subconsciously look to follow those who seem to know what they are doing.

In the corporate and entrepreneurial world, this skill manifests in a few powerful ways:

  • Becoming the Trusted Source: You become the default "go-to" person for answers and guidance, which builds incredible leverage over time.

  • Commanding Senior Rooms: As a younger person in a room with executives or board members, speaking with conviction gives you a genuine voice among people twice your age.

  • Closing High-Stakes Deals: When clients are looking to exchange money for a solution or service, conviction leaves zero doubt in their minds that your business is the exact vehicle they need.

How to Talk with Conviction When You Don't Have the Answer

You don't always have to know 100% of the answer to speak with authority. (With the obvious disclaimer: if you're in a high-stakes scenario, don't start pulling completely made-up facts out of thin air.)

So when you are making statements or navigating a conversation where you don't know the exact answer with total certainty, what operational framework do you follow?

I work from this core rule: Make as high of an educated guess as you can, deliver it with the confidence that it is accurate, and phrase it in a way that gives you room to pivot if questioned.

Here is how those three components break down:

1. Leverage Overlapping Knowledge

When making an educated guess, rely on generalist knowledge and pattern recognition. What else do you know that has enough overlap with the topic at hand to form a solid baseline? As you build your skill set, this becomes second nature. For example, knowledge of e-commerce web design informs buyer impulse and decision-making; understanding buyer impulse informs general digital marketing; digital marketing informs conversion optimization. Because these domains overlap, you can make comfortable, grounded deductions without second-guessing yourself in the moment.

2. Believe in What You're Saying As You Say It

Do not question yourself mid-sentence. Once you've grounded your deduction in overlapping knowledge you already possess, there is no reason to hesitate. Deliver the statement firmly. That internal momentum comes from an unwavering belief in your ability to process information on your feet.

3. Pivot with Grace

Borrowing from the software development concept of "failing with grace" - where a system encounters an error smoothly without crashing - give yourself room to adjust. If you don't hold the absolute answer, don't state your point so aggressively that you'd have to die on that hill. Phrase your view so there is space to explain your reasoning or adjust as new information comes in. If someone challenges you, explaining the logic behind your educated guess saves your reputation and prevents unnecessary embarrassment.

Above all else, never be afraid to admit when you're wrong. People worth working with have far more respect for someone who can admit a misstep than someone who stubbornly defends an incorrect point just to save face.

What Is the Conviction Framework for High Performers?

Most people in business are navigating uncertainty and will naturally look to those who project direction and clarity. Being the person who sounds composed and knowledgeable gives you immediate trust in rooms where credibility is hard to earn.

When you need to communicate authority - especially under uncertainty - keep these principles in mind:

  • Form an Educated Deduction: Connect patterns from overlapping domain knowledge to reach a logical baseline.

  • Deliver with Composure: Speak firmly without self-doubting or second-guessing yourself in the middle of your point.

  • Maintain Room to Pivot: State your reasoning clearly so you can refine your position with grace if new data comes to light.

  • Own Misalignments Quickly: Never die on a wrong hill. Real conviction includes the confidence to admit when a statement was incorrect.
